High Falls Pet Show goes to the dogs (and all other animals)

Calling all animals from across the region – and the people who love them. It’s time to bark, meow, hoot and holler with joy! The 30th anniversary edition of the High Falls Pet Show, a celebration of beloved animal companions, will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. Registration begins at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Community Church of High Falls on Second Street. The judging competition and prize selection start at 11 a.m. and will conclude around 1 p.m. This popular annual event is brought to the community by friends and neighbors from the High Falls Civic Association. Pets of all sizes and shapes are welcome, from puppies to ferrets, from hawks to roosters. One single registration fee of $5 allows each pet to enter three competitions. “The motto of the High Falls Pet Show is ‘Everyone’s a Winner,’” said event co-organizer Rigmor Berntsen. “Animals are our faithful friends. So, let’s return the favor! The High Falls Pet Show celebrates these compassionate companions, while offering lots of fun.”   A series of ribbons will be bestowed upon all pets in attendance, citing their individual qualities and superlatives. The main competition, in the Judge’s Circle, will be presided over by local luminaries Tina McKenna and Edward Schoelwer. McKenna is a retired editor and actress, and Schoelwer is a longtime impresario in the theater and dance community, and a playwright. Competition judges for the event are George and Brigitte Nagle, proprietors of The Spy Social Eatery and Bar of High Falls and Jay Blotcher, longtime volunteer for the dog rescue organization Animals for Adoption in Accord. First-, second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded in 10 competitive categories. They are: Pet/Owner Look-Alike; Peewee-Size Pet; Jumbo-Size Pet; Whippersnapper (most youthful); All-American Mutt; Old Friend (senior pet); Most Unusual Pet; and Happy Days Are Here Again (best pet rescue story). The competition will reach a fevered pitch with grand prize ribbons awarded to Mr. and Ms. High Falls, the animals whose personalities best reflect the spirit of the hamlet. Following the final awarded ribbons, all humans, especially children, are invited to take part in a parade with their two-legged and four-legged companions. Local saxophonist Harvey Kaiser will serenade with his smooth jazz stylings. The event will also feature vendors offering animal-related services and selling animal-related items. Vendor space is still available, with a preference for pet-related vendors, such as pet-sitting, grooming, animal food purveyors. To register for vendor space, contact Yvette Lee at ylee2k1@aol.com. All pets are the responsibility of their owners and must be leashed or in a suitable carrier. Admission to the Pet Show is free. All are welcome. Entry is open to everybody – not solely High Fallonians. The High Falls Pet Show is one of several community-wide events held annually by the High Falls Civic Association. The annual schedule also includes High Falls Fair Day in July and the Holiday Tree Lighting in December. HFCA holds monthly meetings and welcomes new energy and ideas.
