) In celebration of the 50-year anniversary of that iconic day, “Woodstock,” the Oscar-winning documentary about the classic 1969 concert, directed by Michael Wadleigh, will be shown at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 18 ($6 matinee), and 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 ($8/$6 members), at the Rosendale Theatre, 408 Main St., Rosendale. “Woodstock” features history-making performances by many of the legends of rock that took the stage over the three-day phenomenon: Richie Havens; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Canned Heat; Joan Baez; The Who; Country Joe and the Fish; Arlo Guthrie; Ten Years After; John Sebastian; Santana; Janis Joplin; Sly and the Family Stone; and a staggering finale by guitar hero Jimi Hendrix. Whether it was a front seat on Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy field or being blasted awake by Jefferson Airplane’s morning maniac music, or being stranded in a car all weekend on the New York State Thruway; or being a Bethel resident whose front lawn was trampled by tie-dyed pilgrims or a flower child momentarily wilted by the brown acid; whether true believer or still-irate detractor; whether it was seen as the beginning or end of an era, or finally coming to realize that the Woodstock Music & Art Fair was far more than the sum of its freakishly beautiful parts, those who lived it, loved it. Billed as “3 Days of Peace & Music” and an “Aquarian Exposition,” the seismic eruption eventually became known simply and universally as “Woodstock.” It has become a bona fide political and cultural moment in world history. This documentary film of the watershed counterculture Woodstock Festival that took place in August 1969 near Bethel in Sullivan County had seven editors, including Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese, and director Michael Wadleigh. Despite its taboo-breaking content, the film was a great commercial and critical success. It received the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. “Woodstock” marks the 53rd film in the Music Fan Film Series, the uniquely curated film and music lovers’ program.
